About the Author

Kenneth S. Shultz earned his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Industrial/Organizational psychology from Wayne State University. He is a professor in the psychology department at California State University, San Bernardino and serves as director of their Master of Science Program in I/O Psychology. Professor Shultz teaches undergraduate courses in statistics, tests and measurements, and industrial psychology and graduate courses in correlation and regression statistics, applied psychological measurement, and personnel selection and test validation. Prior to his academic career, he worked for four years for the City of Los Angeles as a personnel research analyst, where he conducted applied psychological measurement projects in job analysis, test validation and other applied areas, and he continues to engage in consulting assignments on applied measurement issues for public and private agencies, giving him solid "real world" experience to apply to this book. He has presented papers and published articles on a variety of applied measurement and test construction issues in addition to his substantive work in the aras of personnel selection, aging workforce issues, and retirement. When not teaching or writing, he enjoys running, watching sports, and generally hanging out with his wife and son.

Excellent guide for action against viral hate

i am surprised at the people who have "reviewed" this book. I seriously doubt they have even read it. for one thing, the book does not advocate government regulation of the internet, far from it. the authors suggest many things that can be done to combat the problem of viral hate including parents talking with their children about the issue. one of the things the ADL and the authors have done is to work with social media sites, not to police or restrict free speech, but to develop standards and ways of coping with hate postings. this is a fair, well thought out, informative book.

I suggest these "reviewers" read the book,they might learn something!!!!

Interesting, with Important Points -

The power of the Internet lies in its viral nature - anyone can be a publisher, even the most vicious of haters, aided by the ease and rapidity with which websites, social media pages, video and audio downloads, and instant message can be created and disseminated make Internet propaganda almost impossible to track and combat. Links, viral emails, and 're-tweets' enable lies to self-propagate with appalling speeds. Hitler and the Nazis could never have dreamed of such tools.

Racially-centered movements, rabidly anti-government militia groups (often using code words such as 'survivalist,' 'constitutionalist,' and 'sovereign,' quasi-religious groups that cloak ultra-conservative agendas in rhetoric about 'religious freedom,' abound. Such groups include Stormfront, Hammerskin Nation, the National Socialist Movement, the New Black Panther Party for Self Defense, and Nuremberg Files site (publishes names and addresses of physicians providing abortion services, thereby inviting attacks). Benign facades are designed to lull visitors into assuming the site is legitimate - sprinkling a few facts among many distortions and lies. Some are sponsored by pseudo-academics whose work has repeatedly been exposed as shoddy and inaccurate.

Don Black, former KKK grand dragon, noted that the Internet 'has been the greatest recruiting breakthrough in the 30 years I've been involved.' Numerous Facebook pages have been created that deny the Holocaust, attack Obama with racist comments/photos, ObamaCare, etc. Huge numbers of online sites sell hate-oriented books, games, movies, etc. that very few reputable retailers would stock. Some detail the 'secret history' of sinister manipulations supposedly behind eg. the U.N., the Federal Reserve, and Hollywood, while others offer advice for terrorists and resistance fighters.

U.S. courts have been reluctant to rule against free speech, especially presumptively. Many European nations have hate speech laws that permit censorship. Arab citizens sometimes extrapolate and conclude such material on U.S. sites must therefore be approved by the U.S. government and official policy.

The authors then explore legal options and educational remedies - unfortunately, not likely to succeed.

My one criticism is that the authors unwittingly take the position that most any criticism of Israel, various races, etc. is inappropriate.

The content was not what I was looking for. I then looked at the authors and realized why....don't waste your time. They complain about everything, but the catch is....what they are complaining about is what they are doing. The difference: one is print and the other is on the net.

I have had the greatest oppourtunity to meet the author at an antenatal class held by Tina Otte and I for one was very impressed by Alan. He has really a wealth of experience and says it how it is. His book explains with great ferver the joys and fear of impending fatherhood. I would recommend this to any new fathers to be. This is a great read. Thanks Alan for writing a great book

Joseph explores a specific theoretical issue, the pro-drop parameter. Section II brings together papers on syntax, semantics and pragmatics which examine theoretical and descriptive issues within current models such as Principles & Parameters, HPSG, Relevance Theory and others. Section III covers phonology and phonetics and also presents research on theoretical issues such as government phonology, the phonology-morphology interface, as well as descriptive issues including the instrumental investigation of selected phonetic phenomena. Section IV covers discourse and style and deals with spoken and written discourse including miscommunication, metaphor and issues on politeness. Educational Philosophy

In our many years of teaching introductory statistics courses, we have continually searched for ways to improve the teaching of these courses. Our vision for teaching these introductory business statistics courses has been shaped by active participation in a series of Making Statistics More Effective in Schools of Business, Decision Sciences Institute, and American Statistical Association conferences as well as the reality of serving a diverse group of students at large universities. Over the years, our vision has come to include these principles:

Students need a frame of reference when learning statistics, especially since statistics is not their major. That frame of reference for business students should be the functional areas of business—that is, accounting, economics and finance, information systems, management, and marketing. Each statistical topic needs to be presented in an applied context related to at least one of these functional areas.

Virtually all the students taking introductory business statistics courses are majoring in areas other than statistics. Introductory courses should focus on underlying principles that nonstatistics majors will find useful.

The use of spreadsheet and/or statistical software should be integrated into all aspects of an introductory statistics course. In the workplace, spreadsheet software (and sometimes statistical software) is usually available on a decision maker's desktop. Our teaching approach needs to recognize this reality, and we need to make our courses consistent with the workplace environment.

Textbooks that use software must provide enough instructions that students can effectively use the software, without the software (and instruction) dominating the course.

The focus in teaching each topic should be on the application of the topic to a functional area of business, the interpretation of results, the presentation of assumptions, the evaluation of the assumptions, and the discussion of what should be done if the assumptions are violated. These points are particularly important in regression and forecasting and in hypothesis testing. Although the illustration of some computations is inevitable, the focus on computations should be minimized.

Both classroom examples and homework exercises should relate to actual or realistic data as much as possible. Students should work with data sets, both small and large, and be encouraged to look beyond the statistical analysis of data to the interpretation of results in a managerial context.

Introductory courses should avoid an overconcentration on one topic area (such as hypothesis testing) and instead provide breadth of coverage of a variety of statistical topics. This will help students avoid the "I can't see the forest from the trees" syndrome.

Our focus emphasizes analyzing data, interpreting the output from Microsoft Excel or Minitab or SPSS®, and explaining how to use this software while reducing emphasis on doing computations. Therefore, we have added a great deal of computer output and integrated this output into the fabric of the text. For example, in the coverage of tables and charts in Chapter 2, the focus is on the interpretation of various charts, not on their construction by hand. In our coverage of hypothesis testing in Chapters 7 through 9, extensive computer output has been included so that the p-value approach can be used. In our coverage of simple linear regression in Chapter 10, it is assumed that Microsoft Excel, Minitab, or SPSS® will be used and, thus, the focus is on the interpretation of the output and not on hand calculations (which have been placed in a separate section of the chapter).

Very useful- very practical examples

My knowledge of stats was limited to mean, median, mode, SD, variance, and the other basics; I knew very little about probability distributions, hypothesis testing, regression and the like. This book explains the fundamentals very well and the exercises are very practical, so they are easy to relate to. I would recommend buying the edition with the CD because there a number of exercise questions that need the CD. It's totally worth it!

This book by Penny Lynch is a master piece in the field of project finance modelling. It is a well written book, following the best techniques to enable you to become a good project finance modeller. It teaches basic ideas such as standardization and robustness in all steps of modelling. The book includes some exercises with the solutions, which are proof of the fine-tuning of Penny. She is also providing courses using the book as a guideline. I strongly recommend buying the book to learn the basic things about Advanced modelling for project finance i.e. circularity issues, using VBA, switching to annual or semi-annual periods, etc. The clarity of the organization of the book and the worksheets in Excel format are a good starting point for a seasoned modeller interested to learn main things. About the Author
After working for more than a decade with the project finance teams of two leading banks in the city of London, and for another eighteen years as an independent consultant, Penny Lynch has been involved in the use of spreadsheets for cash flow modelling since its inception in the early 1980s. Nearly thirty years of subsequent real-world modelling experience has been steadily formalised into a well-defined philosophy and methodology as Penny has concurrently developed and presented a series of international training programs for leading funders, consultants and sponsors. Head and shoulders above other Project Finance texts

As a hopeful analyst for a project finance-oriented development firm, I've glanced, skimmed and read multiple books supposedly teaching you how to build financial models. Modelling project finance is not easy task, nor is it one that is easily taught. While there are numerous, excellent texts that teach the reader how to build corporate finance models, project finance is a totally different story. Of the PF offerings out there, most are conceptual. Conceptual is good - to a point.

Lynch's Financial Modelling for Project Finance was passed into my hands by a friend, and it is far and away the most organized, concise and reference-able text I've come across. There is absolutely no fluff throughout the entire workbook, but this doesn't necessarily make it dry. Lynch does an excellent job of telling you what you need to do, why you need to do it, and to implement it in the model.

One of the most valuable takeaway's I've had so far has been the continual emphasis on how to create timelines and counters in the "work" worksheet, which allow accurately timed calculations for every other aspect of the model (Capex, Financing, Ops, etc).

Along with the workbook, the purchaser gains access to a set of spreadsheets that range from fully built models to various exercises in constructing or solving them in order to hone your skills. These models and exercises revolve around one specific case study: a water treatment project. While this may not be specifically the industry you'd plan to work in, the case study is sufficiently complex enough to illustrate any and all conventions required to build out a project finance model in other industries.

The best part about the case study is that it actually puts you in the role of the financial analyst. The first exercise gives you notes of a meeting about the project that your firm receives an invitation to bid for. It grants the analyst limited information and requires you to build a base analysis around limited information. The exercises get subsequently more complex, and by the time I was finished with them, I felt beyond prepared to apply what I'd learned to any other project-finance oriented solution.

A last point, the organization of this book truly shines. Every section is referenced, every chapter that might require background from another chapter is referenced, you know exactly where to find things when you need to find them.

The price tag on this book is hefty, and I didn't have to pay it. With that said, I plan to once I land a job using the skills I've developed from this book - its worth every penny. Lastly, it might be noted that I emailed the author with various questions, and woke to them answered in full the next morning, with the generous offer to answer any further questions that may arise in my practice and studying.

I enjoyed the style of writing. All in all,I would say it was a very good book. Just enough mystery to keep you reading. Good read. .

Slow Slog With Unlikable People

I had several difficulties with The Good Liar which resulted in my not enjoying the book at all. My first issue was one of my own making. When I read the publisher’s blurb that it was a con vs. con book, I assumed incorrectly that it was a clever, fast moving witty novel such as the kind Cannell used to write before his demise King Con. I couldn’t have been more wrong. This is a low energy drag of a book which moves in fits and starts from scene to scene.

The writing was my second beef. The author infuriatingly uses the passive voice so often that I had no idea what was going on time after time so I had to break from my suspension of disbelief to try and put together how we got where we were. For example, in the first few pages of the book, two elderly folks meet on an Internet blind date which goes all right. The next chapter opens with them having lived together for two months. Nothing intervening and no reason given for the transition nor does it make any sense. They seem to be almost roommates. He gets up every AM early, relieves himself on the floor because he can’t hit the commode. She gets disgusted and cleans it up while he returns to bed. They don’t speak.

The other part of the writing which bugged me is the use of the present tense for past events. So we get sentences like, "Stephen sits at the table his eyes focused on nothing." for an event which occurred years ago.

The last thing that bothered me was that I found no sympathetic or realistic character. They are all lifeless, dreary low energy residents of a failed empire. There is no humor or any other leavening aspect to the book, the story or people. I enjoyed my time here about as much as if I had to spend a few hours in a psych ward with depressives.

If you like a con book, let me suggest any relevant Cannell instead.
