Poorly organized, bad grammar

This book covers a vast array of networking topics, and can serve as a quick primer or reference. However, the depth of treatment varies inexplicably: some areas are explored in way too much detail for an overview text, while others don't have enough information to provide a good basic understanding of the subject. The quality of the text is extremely poor: there is hardly a paragraph without multiple grammar, spelling and punctuation errors, which is very annoying. Another major drawback is the lack of a glossary; by the nature of the subject the book is peppered with acronyms, and looking them up in the index is tedious, because there are many references for most terms and no way to know which one points to a definition.

Dated, But Still A Fun Read

Simak's work-up of a collection of short stories detailing the separation of Earth's Children from the cradle of their birth, told from the perspective of a surviving race of "uplifted" dogs who have long forgotten their own origins, borrows heavily from the then-current paranoia brought on by the Cold War mindset and the philosophy of decentralization as a way to mitigate the damage to the country's most valuable asset - its people - should The Button be pressed. Some of the ideas do not work so well, and some of the writing is of a dated style, but I find if I read with a clear idea of what the author's world looked like I can usually surmount these anachronistic moments. All SF is written about the author's real-time world. We are simply looking at that world through a complex filter constructed by the author. And it pays to remember that Simak was often writing with a wry undercurrent in his work.

I enjoyed most of the book, but I didn't read it in one sitting and read other material between sessions with "City".

In some ways, City shows its age. For example, as mankind moves to the stars and technology allows change into another life form, men as still carrying around paper documents. There is the typical 1950's preoccupation with robots, and as usual the center of Simak's universe is rural Minnesota. City says as much about Simak and the 1950's as it does about the future. However, development of dogs as a sentient race unable to recall their past relationship with mankind, and the development of Jenkins' character are plot devices so effectively used that City stands out as one of the best works of one of science fictions' best writers. Only Simak could have come up with a race of ants worshiping the foot which kicked over their anthill and which served as the catalyst to their civilization, without indulging in bad jokes. [This digital edition contains the final chapter written decades later, which is not always included in hard copy editions.]

An excellent read

It's rare to read a sci-fi book with a sad ending, but this has one. It is so well imagined and is so different from most of the space cowboy & and post apocalypse books popular over the last decade. It presents a totally different look at the future of man, animals and our planet, spanning thousands of years effortlessly. I'm not sure if Simak meant them as I read them, but the introductions to the chapters read (often humorously) like a Dog bible study class, asking so many of the questions my group asks as we try to sort out fact from myth. I'm going to wait a while and read it again. Maybe then I can answer the question: To whom did Jenkins say goodbye?

Short and sensual romance

I always love Kiru Taye's writing and this little gem was no exception. A short read which is great for someone like me who doesn't have a lot of time right now for reading, but still chock full of hot sex and with a romantic storyline that looks set to continue in future instalments. Lust coupled with love is my favourite reading combination, and Scars delivered on both fronts. Kiru writes with such controlled sensuality that I was drawn in to Selina and Benjamin's story from the first page and held transfixed to the end. Can't wait for the next book in this series.

Scars is the first book in the Passion Shields series by Kiru Taye. I chose this book because after reading the summary I wanted to know what happens next.

Selina has a secret she has not shared with anyone. Her new husband has not even seen it yet. She wears a corset to hide what she does not want anyone to see. Selina cannot see beyond the scars to see the beauty that others see when they see her.

Benjamin is a strong and sweet man wrapped up in one. He wants to see behind the walls Selina has constructed.

The chemistry between Benjamin and Selina is blistering hot. The sex scene was hot and spicy. I loved that Benjamin was not bothered by Selina scars and more by her attitude about them.

My first grumble is that the story was so short. I would have found the story more realistic if it was longer. It takes a while to get over the scars. In addition, there seems to be a back-story that I was missing as to how Selina and Benjamin together. Overall, this was an enjoyable quick read. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series

If you don't know the principles of BDSM (like me), it seems as if Selina has made a deal with the devil in the very beginning. Despite the pain, terror and betrayal in her past that still haunts her daily, she agrees to marriage of convenience - her submission in return for her new husband's protection, and getting her brother safely out of Sierra Leone and to the UK.

In the beginning...Selina seems weak and whiny. But as her story unfolds, you realize how strong she really is. Too strong for her own good. She's an educated woman who wears a mask everyday in her job as a pharmacist. No one knows the pain she hides or the cruelties she's suffered. She allows no one to get close.

No one at least, until Ben. His dominance, quiet strength, and compassion quickly get her attention. He knows she's suffering and is determined to peel away her layers and "free" her. His methods may not be conventional, but they have their own attraction...and positive effect.

The couple needs to build trust. Selina wants to trust him, but can she? The last time she trusted a man, it cost her dearly.

I highly recommend "Scars".

Jane Addams of Hull House is a wonderful book that greatly depicts her life and all of her great accomplishments. This book was written with her assistance. It greatly depicts all of her hardships from her mother dying at such a young age to her father dying when she was older. It tells of all of her travels and her trips to Europe. It also tells of her days in Rockford Syminary School. After her school girl days she and her best friend Ellen repair the old crumbling Hull House to a community center for all of the smaller wordly communities to come and shar her beautiful new home with her. She dies as a single woman that recieved her hope and happiness from this beautifly furnished home. She was a great woman that had many accomplishments and goals that she achieved in her fullifiling life. Jane Addams was the first woman to recieve the Noble Peace Prize and one of the greatest women that ever lived.
