It was always the intention that this book should be a study of the uniforms of the army of the Duchy of Warsaw during the Napoleonic wars and therefore does not include much detail about the Polish regiments and Legions in French service; these units and their uniforms are covered in other volumes in the series. About the Author

Gordon Lewis is a dedicated street photographer with over 40 years of experience. He began his writing career answering letters from owners of Olympus cameras, Vivitar flash units, and Kiron lenses. From there he graduated to being a contributing editor to magazines such as Camera 35, Petersen's Photographic, and Camera & Darkroom. Through unforeseen but fortuitous circumstances, he leveraged his irreverent wit into a TV sitcom-writing career, with hit shows such as Amen, Family Matters, and In Living Color to his credit. Now reformed, he earns his living as an e-learning instructional designer for Fortune 500 companies. Gordon lives just outside of Philadelphia-which, not coincidentally, is an excellent location for street photography.

The idea of street photography seems easy. You get an impromptu photograph of someone on the street. That shouldn't require much thought, it might seem, until one has tried to do it, and returns with a sad collection of uninteresting images. There seems to be a real need for photographers interested in doing this kind of work to get some help as the publisher presumed when he asked the author to create this book.

The author offers chapters that talk about things like cameras and technique, look at the work of a few practitioners, suggest places where one can take street photographs, and discuss the styles of street photography. Lewis finishes up with his ideas on what makes a great street photograph. But most of this boils down to: have a small, unobtrusive camera; learn to work fast, at a moment's notice; and have a deep reserve of chutzpa to take pictures of complete strangers with or without their knowledge. A large supply of luck is also desirable. And yet with all of that, anyone who has tried (but not persevered) at street photography can tell you that you won't get many good pictures.

That's because street photography has to have content and knowing how to find it, recognize it and capture it probably can't be found in a book. Looking for something strange or wonderful is probably good, but some of the great street photographers have looked at the ordinary and in looking, made it extraordinary. In fact the most useful tool for a street photographer may be an inquiring mind. As folks say about tennis, or anything else that requires great skill, you've got to do it 10,000 times and you still may not master it. So far I haven't found much street photography skill between the covers of a book, although spending as much time as possible with masters like Henri Cartier-Bresson, or Elliot Erwitt, or Garry Winogrand can certainly help. I would have had greater confidence in Lewis' advice if his own photographs had approached closer to those greats.

That's not to say that this book can't help you become a street photographer. It does tell you the basics of the set-up of street photography, and if you haven't been able to figure that out from looking at street photographs, or you need a little encouragement, the book can be useful. Just don't expect to read this book and take great (or even good) street photos. After you've shot 10,000 you can decide if the book helps.

Less art, more randomness

I'm usually careful about being negative when it comes to books; even if it's not a great volume it probably took the author a lot of work to create. But all the same, there are good options and there are not-so-good options for spending your hard-earned dough. This particular book doesn't quite make the cut.

If you're buying this book for technical, or skill-based, learning, you're better off going somewhere else. The content is largely generic and the sort of thing that can be found anywhere on the web. I didn't get a good sense of the author's personal style or ethos. A better bet for technique would be The Street Photographer's Manual, also to be found here on Amazon.

Of course, another main reason you would buy such a book is to look at great examples of street photography, and enjoy the author's personal style. Sadly, most of what is contained in this book is very commonplace, with little to recommend it. I'm looking for poignancy, juxtaposition, humor, energy... all of those things which make a street photograph transcend time and location to speak to the larger human experience, but I'm having a hard time finding it in the work the author has chosen to show. It's almost as if the decisive moment was not waited for. I would like to be kinder, but I'm left with a feeling that this book was rushed to press by a publisher who wants to get in on the rising tide of modern street photography and not as a showcase of unique and powerful craft.

Also, the book itself is of very low quality. The cover and pages both feel too thin and just cheap.

Edit: 6-20-15. After letting this book settle in further, I actually took an additional star off of my review. Often street images bear multiple visits to really soak in their flavor and contents, but I can honestly count on one hand the images in this book that even interest me. On the other hand, dozens of them exhibit what I would call the wrong moment, or lack of patience or vision... "Uninspiring" is the word that really describes the author's work here depicted, just as "uninspired" is the right word to describe his advice. There is just no insight to be had here. I wanted to like this book, but it has left me quite cold.

Immerse Yourself in a Creative Perspective

Gordon Lewis' Street Photography is both a creative inspiration and also a pleasure to read. If I had to summarize it in one word, it would be "witty." By that I mean that Lewis is elegant, illuminating, and often funny, both in his writing and in his photography. Being able to hear his voice come through in his writing and in his photography (and the photography of others that he includes) really helps the reader understand Lewis's creative point of view. He shows us instead of telling us, and it is contagious.

This is a book for someone who already knows how to use their camera technically, and who wants to improve their aesthetic/artistic ability in the domain of street photography. Obviously, the ability to "read" street photography competently helps one's creative ability to produce quality street photography. Because Lewis's voice comes through in both prose and images, one learns how to see the world as Lewis does.

Let me give a simple example. Early in the book, he shows a photo of rich reds, complex architectural structures, and warm sideways light streaming in to bring it all alive. Only after admiring the photo did I read the caption, where I discovered, to my shock, that the photo was taken in the entryway of a Target department store (!!). When I looked back again at the photo, I realized that it could well have been my own local Target, and I wondered: how many times have I blithely walked past this incredible play of light, color, and structure, not bothering to look, because it was a Target? Throughout, Lewis shows how apparently boring everyday scenes can be turned into very interesting photos--if you just know how to look.

I have many photography and art books with titles that have variants on "how to see," "how to read," "seeing like a photographer" and so on. Rarely do I come away from them--whatever else their merits are--feeling like I am more capable of seeing like a photographer or of reading photography; like anything else, such knowledge is slowly and painstakingly acquired. Yet this beautiful little book Street Photography delivers as much of that as one could reasonably hope in a surprisingly compact space.

Again, I think what made the book work so well is the unusual connection between words and images. Commonly in photography books, the images are stunning and the words are either so few that they don't do much, or so turgid that you know why the author became a photographer and not a writer! This connection between words and images immerses the reader in Lewis' creative point of view. I'm glad for the few hours I spent in it, and I look forward to revisiting this book next time my creativity seems dried up, to remind myself that I have merely forgotten how to see.

About the Author

Dr. Partha Pratim Basu received his Ph D in Political Science from University of Calcutta. Presently he is a Professor of International Relations, Jadavpur University. He has also served as Departmental Chair; Director, School of Media, Communication and Culture; and Coordinator, PG Diploma Course on Human Rights at Jadavpur University. Delightful Read

This was a delightful read. Funny, sexy and engaging. The theme was creative. The panic of a diary lost that contained such personal observations, make that blatant sexual fantasies, is something any reader could cringe over along with Charlotte. The Duke's slow slide from trapped fiancé to willing bridegroom was a pleasure to observe. I laughed dozens of times at the witty exchanges and the camaraderie between some of the characters who knew each other well and felt free to tease and torment.

What I liked a lot:

The lead characters. Charlotte was endearing and the Duke was enticing. Both found the other irresistible and strangely enough both turned out to have both characteristics. The Duke had a much softer side than anyone expected and Charlotte was an unexpected siren.

The diary as a major plot point. One that not only brought the lead couple together; but was connected to so many other characters.

The spicy encounters were well written; although I would have enjoyed a bit more of that and a bit less of the endless parade of secondary characters...

Therefore, what I didn't like as much:

There were more characters running around in this novel than any I've read since `War and Peace'. The former beau and the dual added nothing to the story. The daughter was treated as an afterthought who, in my opinion, should have made an appearance as soon as they began planning a wedding.

This book reminded me again that unmarried, attractive dukes appear to have been available by the hundreds in Regency England. If I counted up the number of dukes who appear in romance novels they would outnumber the working class. England currently has only twenty-three dukes. At any given time in history at least half of the dukes would either be married or grandfather material. Someone evidently believes that the word DUKE sells books. Maybe it does but it's becoming a little trite.

After Reading The Past Books From This Author, This Book Ended Up Like A Duplicate

A handsome, rogue, Duke forced to marry a very proper school headmistress. Expect scandal, duel, intrigues, wicked rogues and curious virgins, and family and friends that are just perfect - these are the content of every book in this series (though this series has another name I think it's just an extension of the Boscastle Family series). And having read them already and is familiar with the past characters I found myself skipping pages where past characters recount what I read on past books to get to the present events.
Don't get me wrong the heroine and hero are great. I actually found myself caring what would happen to the heroine (that's why I skipped pages) and her diary. Ms. Hunter made her alive that every up and downs of her life was a fascinating read. I love that she has a very universal fear and for once her unrequited love is not made the center of the story.
The hero is as alive a character as well. Though he started out as a careless rogue, his character's transition was romantically believable. What else to be said other than he is a typical regency hero - rich, playboy, handsome, and marriage shy.
The whole book is a feel good regency read, characters - both main and secondary - are fun to be with and I found myself puzzling Nick's presence. I wonder if he is an up and coming hero. I understand the appearances of past characters but I think I'd rather read about the current hero and heroine's story than recount the past events I already knew. Granted Ms. Hunter does write quite well and deliver the promised Regency atmosphere, I think I will borrow the next book from this author from the library.

Great Entry in Boscastle series!

The Duchess Diaries: The Bridal Pleasures Series was a great read. Fans of the series have long awaited Charlotte's story from her first appearance in the Boscastle books. Some of the books in the series, while well written, seemed a little much to take. Harriet made a great secondary character in The Devilish Pleasures of a Duke but her own story, The Wicked Duke Takes a Wife, seemed flat. Jillian Hunter has returned her to were she truly belongs, as comic relief, in a tale true to Charlotte's past as a secondary character and to the Boscastle tradition of scandal and humor.
Charlotte and her Duke make a great couple. Charlotte could have been a real "milk and water miss" but Hunter used the secondary plots (rookery thief and the diary, Audrey and the Bow Street Runner, etc) to flesh out the story. My only complaint is a minor one. The wait for the wedding seemed a bit contrived considering the speed at which the other scandal ridden Boscastles were "bedded and wedded."
I waded through the last several books to get back to the core characters of the series and I even paid the full $7.99 to get it on my Kindle instead of waiting a day or so to get it cheaper at my local Walmart. I was not disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Jesus Calling devotional you will LOVE Barbie Swihart's new book Coffee Talk With Jesus - Intimate Chats With The Savior written as if Jesus himself is speaking. When I sat down to read this book it was as if He was using Barbie to deliver a personal message to me about some things I have been dealing with. At the end of each day there is room for journaling what the Lord is speaking to you. An added bonus was the recipes scattered throughout the book. Jesus is always speaking if only we will take the time to listen. This 31 day devotional is to be savored slowly like a good cup of coffee. I came away from my time with this book refreshed and restored in my relationship with Jesus.

Coffee Talk with Jesus DOES NOT disappoint!

As a wife, mom, mentor, writer and full time employee my schedule is pretty full and my days are very busy. While I definitely make time to spend with my Savior I haven't been so great about slowing down long enough to prepare my heart to have him commune with me. And sometimes my to do list is so long that when I start my day I am already whizzing through.

I've been following Barbie's blog for over a year and I knew I'd have to buy this right away. She didn't disappoint! After reading Day 1 this morning I felt myself physically and mentally slow down. My prayer time was somehow different and my entire day was impacted. Barbie's words, the questions she presented and the prayer at the end of Day 1 all prepared my heart for a different kind of "chat" with Jesus. The position of my heart is somehow leaning in, a little closer to Him. I couldn't help but take a sneak peak ahead…looking forward to the next 29 days with this book!

Investing with the Trend provides an abundance of evidence for adapting a rules-based approach to investing by offering something most avoid, and that is to answer the “why” one would do it this way.  It explains the need to try to participate in the good markets and avoid the bad markets, with cash being considered an asset class.  The book is in three primary sections and tries to leave no stone unturned in offering almost 40 years of experience in the markets.

Part I – The focus is on much of the misinformation in modern finance, the inappropriate use of Gaussian statistics, the faulty assumptions with Modern Portfolio Theory, and a host of other examples.  The author attempts to explain each and offer justification for his often strong opinions.

Part II – After a lead chapter on the merits of technical analysis, the author offers detailed research into trend analysis, showing how to identify if a market is trending or not and how to measure it.  Further research involves the concept of Drawdown, which the author adamantly states is a better measure of investor risk than the oft used and terribly wrong use of volatility as determined by standard deviation.

Part III – This is where he puts it all together and shows the reader all of the steps and details on how to create a rules-based trend following investment strategy.  A solid disciplined strategy consists of three parts, a measure of what the market is actually doing, a set of rules and guidelines to tell you how to invest based upon that measurement, and the discipline to follow the strategy

As a 23 year veteran of the financial markets I have to say that this book is a masterpiece as it is an in depth view of the author’s vast knowledge and experience. As a developer/sub-advisor of technically based investment portfolio solutions my expectations of the breadth and depth of this book were exceedingly high…. yet this book delivered by exceeding my expectations. Whether you are new to the world of stock market analysis/ portfolio management or a seasoned pro this book will not disappoint as the author leaves no stone unturned and takes you farther and deeper and includes: a critical look at modern finance, uses and limitations of popular technical indicators for measuring trends, as well as methods and rules for security ranking and selection.

You will likely find yourself revisiting certain sections on market trend analysis, popular indicators and the entire chapters of rules based money management. While the charts and labels are small I suspect this is deliberate as the author places a higher value on explanation, applications and limitations of various indicators so as to increase understanding behind indicators… as opposed to traditional technical analysis which tends to place greater importance on visual chart interpretation of indicators. In that light you will notice that a majority of charts include a simple line chart of the S&P 500 complemented by a single line indicator and in that regard the charts are clean and simple.

After reading this book you are sure to gain a deeper understanding of how financial markets really work, shortcomings of modern finance, destructive forces of human nature in the investment process, as well as uses and limitations of technical indicators. At a minimum you will likely gain a greater appreciation for utilizing weight of the evidence trend following investment strategies. The true value of this book far exceeds the cost of purchase. The full value realized by any reader will be determined by their discipline to learn and apply various techniques covered in this book.

TREND FOLLOWING

I buy every book on trend following that I can find. I'm CEO of MarketCycle Wealth Management, a trend following investment advisory. Most trend following books are a total waste of time. The author put a lot of work into this particular book, simplifying difficult material and backing up what he says. I doubt that anyone will be able to become a trend following investor after reading this, but they may better understand technical analysis as it applies to trend following. So, this book will be worth reading for the average investor/trader, which is the majority of readers, but it may not help at the advanced levels of professional trend followers.

Wow! Far exceeded my already high expectations...

I have been studying trend following and technical analysis for over 30 years so when Greg approached me to proof the technical sections of this book I had high expectations to say the least. Among the hundreds of books I have read on the topic, Greg has really broken the mold with this one. Investing with the Trend is a rare gem in that it not only provides great information but also provokes new thought every time you read it...add it to your library because this is not a one time read.

What this book will deliver:
- highly complex concepts simplified for the average reader
- entertaining stories and examples that help you internalize the information
- extensive research that backs up the claims
- a fresh perspective on modern finance
- an honest and scientific look at the benefits and limitations of trend following
- 40 years of practical (and often hard earned) lessons from a successful trend investor
- a stepping stone to explore further, Greg points out some excellent resources

What this book is not:
- this book will not make you a trend following expert overnight

Bottom line - if you are serious about trend following, it would be a mistake not to read this book. These days, not many things out there will give you as much value for the $80 list price.
