Cyndi Banks is an emeritus professor of criminology and criminal justice from Northern Arizona University and a Associate Vice President of Student Success at Capilano University in Vancouver Canada. She has more than 24 years experience of research and project implementation in developing countries in the fields of juvenile justice, probation, justice policy, and child rights. She has worked as a criminologist in Papua New Guinea, Bangladesh, Iraq, Kurdistan, Timor Leste, Sudan, and Myanmar. She is the author of numerous articles and books, including Criminal Justice Ethics; Youth, Crime and Justice; Developing Cultural Criminology: Theory and Practice in Papua New Guinea; and Alaska Native Juveniles in Detention.

Dark Yet Funny

This is a darker book than Tommy Storm. It's not as wacky (although it IS crazy - in a good way - in places), but it's more subtly satirical and in some ways scarier. I loved the cast of characters (Nack Jickilson, Max Bohr, the 'bi-polar bear', Uladrack... I could go on) that somehow gave this book an old fashioned character-driven feel. And I didn't know what was going to happen in the end which was unusual for these kind of books. Anyway, I loved it, loved the anguish that mirrored Tommy's adolescent pains and even shed a small tear at one point.

The OPC Foundation defines standards for online data exchange between automation systems. They address access to current data (OPC DA), alarms and events (OPC A&E) and historical data (OPC HDA). Those standards are successfully applied in industrial automation.

The new OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) unifies the existing standards and brings them to state-of-the-art technology using service-oriented architecture (SOA). Main advantages of the new standard are:

• Platform-independent technology allows the deployment of OPC UA beyond current OPC applications only running on Windows-based PC systems. OPC UA can also run on embedded systems as well as Linux / UNIX based enterprise systems.
• The provided information can be generically modeled and therefore arbitrary information models can be provided using OPC UA.

This book gives an easy to understand introduction into OPC UA and explains the concepts of the standard and other relevant topics that are not directly addressed by the standard.

Good OPC UA Introduction. English could be better.

The best comments I can make about this book can be taken from the book itself:

From the Preface: The [OPC UA] specification primarily defines how to do things and to a lesser extent explains why it was designed that way. This is the way specifications have to be written to be widely applied by many developers and to guarantee interoperability between different applications. As a result, the OPC UA specification is hard to read for someone new to OPC UA. This is also true for other specifications such as SQL or UML. With this book, we want to fill this gap and provide an easy to understand introduction to OPC UA. We will not provide the same detail as the specification, but rather introduce and explain the main concepts of OPC UA.

Not bad.

I was almost tempted to give it five stars. Not that it's a perfectly five-star book, but considering that there's literally nothing else on OPC, it's good enough to get high ratings.

The book covers UA OPC on the conceptual level pretty extensively and clearly, and considering the fact that the specs for this purportedly "open" standard are not freely accessible (the corporate take on the word "open", I guess), this is the book to go to if you work with OPC.

I agree with the other reviewers that the book is under-proofread, but the problems are not so bad as to impede comprehension.

I also notice that the price just went up twenty percent overnight -- don't you wish something like this happened to your salary? I bought it less than a month ago for about forty-seven, now it's about fifty-seven. On one hand, as far as prices for this sort of literature go it's not that bad, but for christ's sakes, publishers appear to have lost their minds in the last couple of years. How can you jack up something twenty percent overnight? Is it their way to maintain income during bad economy? Get the book in the library or at least get your employer to pay for it. Naturally search the net for best prices.

Overall, if you need OPC, you have no other choices, and this one (amazingly) is totally adequate for a comprehensive conceptual overview. This is rarely the case: usually esoterica like that are either completely uncovered or covered exceptionally badly. This book is not bad though; I feel no remorse giving it four stars.

Essential starting point in OPC UA

I regard this book as the first one you should read if you are new to OPC UA. It explains the concepts good and is understandable if you are a technical IT person (bear in mind that it is intended for IT specialists). It lays the concepts well and has a few examples that make things alot easyer. For the information it delivers it is well priced.
Do not be frightened if you are at the middle of the book and things are still a little blurry, as things will start to clear out. Maybe the only thing that is a little troublesom is the organization of the chapters. The author shows a little bit of architecture in the beginning but jumps to modelling and services/transport. Only at the last quarter of the book more architecture is explained, I think that he should have kept more architecture in the beginning to make a more fluent tranition from general specifications to detail.

From the foreword: "This book, originally published as a guide for British lieutenants and captains, demonstrates that improvements in technology-much of it available to both sides - have had only a modest impact on infantry fighting in this rugged terrain. However, it also demonstrates that the key to enhancing basic infantry effectiveness is using the terrain effectively, maintaining force security and understanding the mountain people. General Sir Andrew Skeen spent decades dealing with this frontier. His combat experience in the Afghanistan frontier region was extensive, but he also saw action against the Boxers in China, in Somaliland, Gallipoli and the trenches of the Western Front in World War I. His final field posting was as the Chief of the General Staff of the Army of India. "Passing it on" is about passing on his experience in this turbulent region to the lieutenants and captains who were then dealing with the problems of mountain combat against Pushtun tribesmen. His advice is still relevant to what our soldiers are facing today. The mission of the Foreign Military Studies Office is to esearch and present foreign ideas and perspectives to better understand present and future problems. Occasionally we visit the past to find those ideas and perspectives. This 1932 book is not so much a step backwards as the (re)discovery of a useful map for now and the future. About the Author
Les Grau is a retired US Army officer who fought guerrillas in South Vietnam and left on a stretcher. Consequently, his appreciation for guerrilla tactics came early in his career. The Army later taught him Russian, and his tours of duty included frequent trips to the Soviet Union and elsewhere. He has is the author of three books on the Soviet-Afghan War, including The Other Side of the Mountain: Mujahideen Tactics in the Soviet-Afghan War (with Ali Jalali). Mike (Misha) Gress grew up in the wilds of Siberia where everyone's dad, including his own, was a veteran of the fight against the Nazis. He joined the Soviet Army and served in the infantry (motorized rifle) forces, and afterward produced The Soviet-Afghan War: How a Superpower Fought and Lost with Les Grau.

Comprehensive and up-to-date review of solvent application

The Handbook of Solvents contains up-to-date information about the usages of solvent. The references of each chapter show that the book was written with up-to-date materials. As a coating and paint technology engineer, I have interests in solvent selection. This book guided me to select solvent by its solubility properties, evaporation properties, toxicities and their relation to the appropriate applications.

Suspenseful and surprising. I couldn't put it down.

One of the things you should probably know about me is that I am an Anglophile. I lived in England for 5 months when I was in college and have since adored all things British. Any book set in England already has my good will from the get go. Add to this an unusual format and premise and The Last Thing I Remember, by Deborah Bee, had me enthralled throughout.

A young woman is in a coma but can hear everything that is going on around her. She must first figure out who she even is and how she wound up in this state. This book plays on one of my biggest fears, being in a coma and possibly being declared brain-dead. The young woman also wonders: who did this to her? Was this a mugging or was someone trying to kill her? There is so much to unravel in this story that I had to keep reading.

The book also explores assumptions about class in England. The young woman, Sarah, is from a "posh" background and moves to a more working-class neighborhood. There she meets teenager Beth, who is trying to survive a brutal high school environment. Both of these characters have more in common than one would imagine. Together they find ways to deal with the violence in their lives.

I enjoyed how the book built up the suspense over how and why Sarah was injured. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, a new element would appear that would make me second-guess myself.

Clever addictive tale.

Read this in two hours straight - the addictive quality is way up there. You just do NOT want to stop reading. That in itself says something about The Last Thing I Remember.

The book for me was made by one of our two main protagonists, Kelly, teenage girl, typical of that age SUCH an authentic voice Deborah Bee brings to her. She is hilarious and complicated with a dry wit and a potty mouth - I loved reading her portions of the story as she tells the tale of her friendship with Sarah. Sarah we also hear from in her comatose state as she begins to piece together her own life both from memories resurfacing and hearing what is going on around her. Unfortunately she cannot communicate this. She is alone.

Its a tautly plotted well written novel exploring themes of marital secrets, childhood influences and bullying - as Sarah lies trapped within her own body her only defence really is Kelly - and the two stories intertwine really well which is what keeps you turning those pages with something of an obsession.

It is a twisty tale with an ending that whilst I did see coming had no lesser of an impact for that. Anticipating getting there was just as emotive as it would have been if I'd had no idea and was hit with a surprise. The finale is also very clever and really this was a great read from start to finish.

The Last Thing I Remember is spot on Summer reading. Shame that our weather isn't living up to the quality of the novels I'm getting through. In the rain.

A wise and unusual novel

One of this story’s two narrators is a woman in a coma – locked-in syndrome – who has lost her memory. This premise represents a formidable challenge for the novelist, but Deborah Bee skilfully resolves the technical difficulties and the result is a book that absorbs and surprises.

Sarah reconstructs key events in her life on the basis of the conversations she hears by her bedside – her mum and dad, her (shrill and unlikable) sister, her next door neighbor, nurses and doctors, and Kelly, a teenager whom Sarah has befriended. Kelly is the second narrator, whose distinctive London patois is authentic and strikingly eloquent.

The Last Thing I Remember examines the character and legacy of violence – the violence of secondary school bullying, the violence of an abusive husband, and the violence that may lurk beneath the surface of ordinary lives.

The theme is bleak, but the observation is shrewd. “You don’t realise until you have no memories at all that you are a product of them,” Sarah tells herself as her consciousness expands by fits and starts. “Is there anything more tragic than seeing someone cry when they’re eating a lollipop?” she wonders. Elsewhere she notes that “When you cry, lying on your back, the tears go in your ears.”

As Sarah struggles to open her eyes and speak, fragments of childhood memory are conveyed in evocative prose. The garden appears idyllic, before we learn what lay at the bottom of it.

This is a wise and unusual novel that is well worth reading.
