The patriarch of the clan, who had been horribly injured at the Battle of Appomattox Station, is in constant pain, and is very limited in what he can do, with missing fingers, and a permanently damaged leg. His wife, Rebecca is occupied with trying to raise five very active children while rebuilding the horse farm that is her family’s traditional source of income.
Charlie and Rebecca are joined by old friends from Culpeper and from the Army to rebuild their lives and the town of Culpeper, while new people slowly return or migrate to the town, hoping for a new life.
In this carefully researched second book of the Redmond Family Saga, Charlie and Rebecca’s relationship continues to grow, as Charlie finally comes to recognize that he is indeed a man, though with the body of a woman, and to accept himself. Rebecca is pleased to have her Charlie back, and in one piece, if not physically, at least emotionally.

Too pricey

The price for the book it way too high for kindle. Paying 9.99 is a good price for this book. The story is amazing. The characters draw you into their lives and story. I couldn't wait for this book to be released. I'm just stuck on the price and I can't bring myself to pay 11.99 that's just too much. Other than that I have no problems at all and would encourage many people to read both books. I finished the first book in 3 days between classes.

Love this series.

I didn't know this book even existed. I had read the first book a long time ago, but reread it so i could move into the second book. I like this series because it is about the rebuilding of the US after the Civil War. The history is great and the characters are well built. There weren't any spelling or grammar errors, it just needed some proofing to remove words out of context or duplication. I am anxious to read the third book.

An excellent history and interpretation of the New Deal era.

Colin Gordon writes a fascinating history of the New Deal, which challenges the reading of Gabriel Kolko and Capture Theory. He argues that their was no monolithic business interest, but that the competitiveness of individual firms made it virtually impossible to organize around and control government regulation. Gordon's writing is excellent and his examples capture the age. A must read for any scholar of the era, or anyone who thinks they know all there is to know about the New Deal.

Disappointing recent edition

We have read Papa Panov's Special Day each Christmas time for 30 years. We have the 1978 edition with illustrations by Nathalie Vilain. When I saw that a more recent edition was available I ordered it hoping that perhaps I could then order additional copies to give to my grown children for their families. What a disappointment -- the older edition had simple, somewhat gritty illustrations of a thin, simple shoemaker; this one has happy, bright watercolors that don't fit the story at all. Papa Panov has become a Santa-clone -- chubby with white hair and beard. Furthermore, there is a gratuitous cat in the illustrations for reasons unknown. Although the same person is credited with the retelling, they have even changed the text: Papa Panov no longer has a grey mustache but a white one; unnecessarily the new text adds 'I'll remember that whenever I read the Christmas story,' which rings false in Papa Panov's voice. All in all, the publisher, Lion Hudson, would have done much, much better re-releasing the old version.

Powerful message.

In this lovely picture book for older children, Papa Panov is an elderly shoemaker, feeling lonely on Christmas Eve. He reads about the birth of Jesus, long ago, and how Mary and Joseph had been turned away at the inn. If they had come here, he thinks to himself, I would have taken them in and cared for them. After drifting off to sleep, Papa Panov has a dream in which Jesus says he will come and visit the old shoemaker the next day. Eagerly, Papa Panov watches the streets on Christmas day, looking for Jesus. Along comes the humble street sweeper, and then a homeless woman and her child, and others who are down on their luck and in need. Papa Panov, though he wants to be watching for Jesus, kindly reaches out to each one who comes his way, offering a bit of food and comfort. When the day ends and Jesus apparently has not come, Papa Panov is disappointed -- until in another dream Jesus says that he had come after all! "I was hungry, and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me water, I was cold and you took me in. All the time you were helping them, you were helping me!"

A beautiful book with a special Christmas meaning

This is a beautifully illustrated book, which shares the deep meaning of Christmas and "Christ-like" living.

The story is based on a classic folk tale, adapted by Leo Tolstoy, and retold by Mig Holder. It is a story about a shoemaker who has a "dream" that he will see Jesus on Christmas Day. He is determined not to miss seeing Jesus. For the whole of Christmas Day, he watches the street in front of his shop very carefully. Things don't turn out quite the way he expects them to, as happens in life. However, he does "see" Jesus on Christmas Day, but in an unexpected way. A poignant reminder of what is expected from us.

The book is 32 pages long. You may be able to find a cheaper version in a different format.

Brilliant biography of one of the enigmas of recent Australian politics

Paul Keating is one of the great enigmas of modern Australian politics. He is a person who excited great emotions both positive and negative. He plainly contributed to a vast raft of overdue reforms in Australia such as floating the Australian dollar and progressive tariff reduction. There are numerous and intense disputes as to the extent of his contribution to these and many other vital reforms not least because some credit is claimed by prime minister Bob Hawke.
David Day has produced a magisterial and articulate biography of a very difficult subject. He does not directly resolve matters such as who gets credit for what in terms of some of the major reforms of the Hawke/Keating era. However, readers will walk away from this with a wider and clearer understanding of the enigma the subject of the biography. It is no criticism of the author that I still find it difficult to accept that all of the features of Paul Keating’s personality and achievements could be packaged in the same human being. I guess that is what makes him so utterly fascinating. Not all of those features are very attractive but Keating had the ability to inspire and charm and to see what needed to be done to improve the Australian economic system. To see that system in operation today is to make it almost impossible to imagine what the system must have been like when Bob Hawke and Paul Keating became, respectively, Prime Minister and Treasurer. (That is not to say that others have not had a hand in developing the economic system we have today. However, none of their successors have undertaken changes which were as fundamental as Hawke and Keating.)
Anyone who has read David Day’s other biographies of great Australian leaders knows that he has set the bar as to standards very high. This biography does not disappoint. I suspect it will be the leading work on the topic for many, many years.

Unless you are dedicated to the series, don't bother

This story disappointed me for a number of reasons. I enjoyed the previous books in the series, although they were not without their flaws but this one was hard to get through.

The characters were flat. Most of the third person POV focused on Ash, so we were treated to an endless internal monologue of how Cael is cute and adorable and perfect, much like a thirteen year old girl writing in her diary about her favorite pop star. The tone did not match the character of a 30-something hard-a** police officer with anger management issues, and quickly grew annoying. Speaking of annoying, Cael. Cael's personality contains three features:
1) The 13 year old girl narration of "OMG I love Ash so much!!!!11!1"
2) Massive inferiority complex that is somehow supposed to be endearing
3) Irrational sulking
Also, both characters have emotional problem that are huge issues until magically they are not. An abusive backstory is not the same thing as character development.

Because the characters fell flat, the romance also failed to engage me. The eventual hook-up came way too late, especially with all the diabetes-inducing internal monologuing about love. Also, Ash's reason for not hooking up with Cael for years is reeeaaalllly dumb. With Dex and Sloane, we saw their relationship build over the course of 4 books. They didn't drop straight into "I love you, baby, you are my everything," territory after their first time.

Finally, the background plot. The world building and procedural aspect of the series has always set it apart from many other M/M series, but I honestly didn't care what was going on until the last 80% of the book, and even then there were no surprises. More of the story was devoted to the badly-handled abuse subplots than the actually interesting government conspiracies. The dialogue was clunky and the humor was forced. The whole thing felt rushed and badly edited.

I haven't written off Charlie Cochet as an author, but there's a fine line between having a distinctive style and being twee and self-congratulatory. Hopefully her next book puts her back on the other side of that line.

Good, but my least favorite of the series.

Enjoyable update to the series, though maybe my least favorite so far. 3.5 rounded down.

I was glad to see Cael and Ash get together, but the while thing felt a bit anti-climactic. To be fair, I thought Ash's ~reasons~ for not wanting to be with Cael felt a little weak, so maybe that's why I didn't think the drama really stacked up. It actually ended up being a but gushier than I'd been expecting/wanting. I get that Ash thinks Cael is the cutest ever, but I needed them to reign in the sappiness.

I was glad we got plenty of Dex and Sloane though, that made me happy. And I really do adore Dex and Cael's relationship.

Still think Tony is sort of a creepy dad, and I thought it was sort of out of line for him to tell Ash about Cael's past like that. I would have been majorly pissed if my parents went over my head and revealed something so personal to a potential love interest....

Plot was okay. I liked how the author moved us to the next stage of things, what with the Coalition being down and all. But I did think that, [just like the Ash thing earlier in the series, it was pretty obvious that Sparks wasn't bad, and I felt like the author was really trying to *trick* me, but ended up being to obvious about it, you know.

Overall, not bad, glad I read it, and would def recommend for fans of the series.

Missing the Magic

I feel so sad giving this only 3 stars :(

The first two books in this series are some of my favorite books of all time. I've read and re-read Hell & High Water and Blood & Thunder so many times that I've lost count. Then Rack & Ruin let me down a little and Rise & Fall let me down even more. I felt like I betrayed my love for these amazing characters by not enjoying their story as much as I had previously.

I hoped that Against the Grain would rekindle my love for this series to the same degree as the first two books but it didn't. I still love the characters but their stories just don't seem to spark the same excitement as they used to.

Regardless of how I've felt about the past few books, these characters will continue to hold a special place in my heart. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that any future books would be able to match the magic of the first two.

Side Note: I've bought and started reading each previous book the moment it was released at 12am. It took me well over a month to finally cave in and get this one. That alone should say something.
