You CAN teach an old dog new tricks

I've been a textile designer for the past 30 years & always considered myself lucky to still be painting things by hand. Recently I was laid off from my job & was forced to acquire years of computer skills in a very short time. Quite honestly I couldn't afford Adobe Photoshop for around $700 however I could easily afford Adobe Photoshop Elements for under $100. I was very apprehensive about designing on a computer in the first place. I was extremely pleased by this book. I'm a very visual person and it takes me a while to gain any technical skill in anything. This book is very well written. I taught me in a way so that I could really learn this subject manner. Frederick covers everything in this book and makes it very, very understandable. I am wholeheartedly recommending this book. It's very detailed, easy to learn from and covers all aspects of textile design. One side note that I would like to mention. While I was working through this book I was able to create a portfolio that was both impressive and that I could discuss with any employer and tell them exactly how I created each repeat, colorway and Yarndye. This has helped in several job interviews already. Again I am wholeheartedly recommending this book.

EXCELLENT BOOK!!!

In the Fashion studio where I work we have 2 copies of adobe Photoshop and a bazillion copies of Photoshop Elements. Quite often I find myself working with elements because all the Photoshop computers are being used. I already own the book Adobe photoshop for textile design & I bought this book hoping that it would help me do similar things in Elements. First of all I was very and pleased with the content of the book. I would say that about 40% is nearly identical to the Adobe photoshop for textile design book. Then again Photoshop & Elements are very similar programs. The rest of the book adapts the same textile design techniques that are in the Photoshop book for Elements. Besides all this There are a few entirely new techniques in the Elements book that I actually wish were in the Photoshop book. Particularly there are a few more techniques on how to create plaids and also there is wonderful advice on how to go back into a repeat & correct it. I'd say the only the only things that I miss that Adobe Photoshop has is the warp tool. The warp tool makes photo draping a little easier. Also when you rotate something in Elements it blurs. However for me this is not a problem because I simple color reduce the design first or I work on the repeat then color reduce it. Also Photoshop Elements doesn't have a mask function however Frederick gives a simple and easy work around for this. All in all I would say that if you have Adobe Photoshop Elements and are a textile designer then this book has a substantial wealth if information and is well worth buying. Also if you do at sometime upgrade to Adobe Photoshop then 99.9% of the techniques can be used in Adobe Photoshop.

Finally! This book is precisely what I needed.

This book arrived yesterday, and I am licking the pages, learning how to use PSE for fabric design. One of the first things I want to mention is that the author is very accessible. He has already answered a question so that I didn't feel like I was out there alone, stuck somewhere on the computer, unable to find my way out of the jam. I am also taking an adult ed Photoshop (not Elements) class. Most of the information translates to Elements. However, the adult ed class is designed more for manipulating and cleaning up photos, and designing marketing materials. Though useful, these are not the meat of what I want to learn. This book, Photoshop Elements for Textile Design, is EXACTLY what I needed. I could have skipped the Adult Ed class and just bought the book, but really, learning is never wasted. So it's all good. I have the book set up in a recipe holder next to the computer and am committing myself to at least a couple of hours a day to really learn the program. About the book: I'm about 25 pages into the exercises, and I'm happy to report that the assignments all make sense and progress in a fashion that feels 1) logical and 2) like I am actually learning some skills. The book is over 100 pages long, and the assignments are getting trickier. I'm hanging in there, and it's not a struggle to do so. Don't be scared by the price: you are getting a class from which you will actually acquire skills. This is money very well spent.
