Life in a gulag, corroborating Solzhenitsyn's novels

Victor Herman's father was a radical idealist, so much so, that he took his unpopular Communist ideals, complete with family, to live in Russia back in the 20's. Back then, it was unpopular, if not downright dangerous, to be a labor agitator and Commie in Detroit. But what Herman's dad didn't know, or didn't care to see, was that it could be fatal to live in Stalin's Russia.
During the crazed time of the purges, Victor Herman found himself suddenly dropped as star athlete and pet American Communist youth when he was swept away into one of the many prison camps (gulags) that were strung across the Russian landscape in what Nobel Prize author Solzhenitsyn referred to as The Gulag Archipelago. Solzhenitsyn's novel "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" outlined in spare, horrific terms, the near-animal existence in that cruel environment.
Herman's own tale parallels everything in "Ivan Denisovich" and adds the attendant horror of gambling-for-body-parts (tasty snacks for the winner) and living on corpse-fed rats. Herman's life once he was released from the gulag was hardly better, living in an ice "chop-out" in the permafrost of Siberia.
This book perhaps sheds some light on current events in the former Soviet Union, when you wonder what happened to the former inmates of the prison camps. This is a story that deserves to be preserved, and it is a shame it is no longer in print.

This books helped me finish a marathon

I was training for a marathon while I read this book. When I started to get a cramp or my legs hurt I would think about what he went through and keep going. I gave this book to a friend who took it on a trip to hike Kilimanjaro. When he got back he said that at the end of the day members of the team were reading the book but couldn't complain about how tired they were especially after reading how Victor Herman's wife and daughter trekked through the snow to be with Victor in an 8x8 hole in the snow living off of potatoes. This book also puts into perspective how little communism cares for individuals and how evil Stalinism was and is.

An Awsome book

Victor Herman is indead a rare individual. Victor excelled at everything he put his hand to and above all he survives. I have read many books by survivors of the Russian Gulags, and although their stories are tragic and touching you know that by definition they are not the ones who really had it bad. Those people are all dead. Victor is the exception to that rule. When he was imprisoned he was in absolute top physical condition and he was a never give up type of guy. Even with those two factors he never should have survived what he went through. It is unbeleivable that he is alive. As if that is not enouph there is his wife Galina. Would you walk hundreds of miles through siberia where it is so cold that the trees explode, while pregnant to live in a hole in the ice (literally) with practically no food just to be with your husband? She did. Victor was and is a survivor, but Galina is a woman of incredible character who is willing to make the utmost sacrifices for what she considers important in her life. If I had only read the first pages of this book I would have to say that Victor is a literary giant even though he is in no means trying to be one. His question on the first line of the book is not a rhetorical question, but truly a stuggle of epic proportions that really defines the whole book. "How can I tell you about my life?" I savor thes first few pages every time I read them and tears come to my eyes. This book never slows and is a testament to what suffering and hardship can do to and for people. What happened in Russia was in every way wrong and tragic but as in all such situations it brought out both the best and the worst in people. I have such deap respect for the people in this book that I named my daughter after Victors wife Galina and hope that she will develope the depth of character that Galina Herman displayed

With the gentle cadence befitting a simpler time, Bradby (More Than Anything Else) harvests a bounty of bucolic imagery for this poetic look at a family farm. A boy relates the challenges, never-ending work and sweet rewards that come with working the land. On each spread, minimalist stanzas ("A plow some grain pray for rain. A sow a shed may all be fed") precede a more personal statement ("Mama cooks the corn cakes, Daddy says the prayer. Sorghum, ham, and jelly it's been a good year"). By book's end, the boy sadly shares the information that encroaching suburban sprawl and development mean the end of his farm home and way of life. Throughout, Rand (Sailing Home) alternates between sunny full-page watercolor portraits showing the boy and his family, whom he depicts as African-Americans, and smaller airy vignettes providing a good sense of the comfortable rhythms of the proceedings. His parting illustration of a lone bulldozer razing tall trees brings home Brady's message in a quietly dramatic style. Ages 4-7.

Grades 2-5--A beautiful story about a vanishing way of life. Warmth and humor fill the pages as a farm boy recalls, in verse, many family-shared moments-stargazing, eating Mama's ice cream, and jumping the fence to escape a butting goat. He also remembers the hard but satisfying work of building a new home, mucking out the barn, and harvesting a big crop. Ultimately, he shares his sadness when the city grows closer to his home and the bulldozer comes. "A beetle/a fly/a cow gone dry./A rabbit/a farm/they're all gone," and memories then replace them. The first six lines of each stanza are short and quick, and are followed by three longer, slower, more personal lines. The economy of words efficiently paints the picture of the hard work, "A stump/a rock/pull till you drop"; or country pleasures, "A dove/a ring/wake up and sing." These descriptive phrases appeal to all the senses. Equally as strong are the watercolor illustrations, often with humorous touches, that capture the memories and emotions in large double-spread paintings and small vignettes. The wide expanse of sky and field contrast with later pictures of the encroaching urbanization. The juxtaposed illustrations of traffic and buildings with a quiet stream dappled with sunlight are particularly effective. Changing Times

Once Upon a Farm is a story about a family living on a farm. The story is told in poetry form. It tells about all the things you do daily on a farm, and all the hard work that is involved. It also tells about the fun times. Then for an unknown reason, the farm is taking away and destroyed so the city can build things where the farm once was. I think the author felt very strongly about this type of thing. It is a story about something good that is taken away, because people believe it is for the better of everyone.

Comprehensive GIS Book

A comprehensive GIS book specially for the introductory and intermediate readers and students. The book has dealt with the current organizational and technical issues of GIS. The components of GIS are described with illustrations. Object Oriented model in database could have been added. Since this is an introductory book, some of the chapters for advanced readers are concise. The content is clear even for the nontechnical readers.

An ideal introduction and valuable reference

This review refers to the 1996 Norwegian edition. Having studied GIS for 2 years, first at a Norwegian college, and then doing an MSc in GIS at a UK university, I have found this book a very valuable reference. The examples and case descriptions are depicting real-life problems, the illustrations are explanatory and to the point. The book covers GIS and related topics in a way I haven't found in any other books. I can recommend this book to anyone, student or professional. Now I am about to start a PhD at a University in the US, where I have noticed that this book in fact is the required textbook for GIS. To me this proves the overall quality of this book.

This is part of your Lifelong Success Instruction Manual...

This book is great right from the start. As stared ealy on, this is not a "workout" program but a training system. Commander Devine provides mental training that is much needed with the physical training. I felt this was as important if not not more so. I have read the other books and would highly recommend all of them. I appreciate Commander Devine having the insight to see a need and the willingness to put his thoughts on paper for non-military imdividuals lile myself to benefit frim his experience and knowledge.

Wish I belonged to a crossfit gym

Doesn't really work for me that well I don't belong to a crossfit gym so I don't get sandbags or rings or any weight vests. But try it if you belong to one. Great fitness book (has workouts)

It will make you, or improve your Fitness

It is a straight to the point book. The exercises and associated exercise programmes are for those with a standard of fitness. No fancy equipment needed, no Zen are inner enlightment either. I am following the routine in the book for the past month and I feel it has benefited my fitness. A good buy.
