For Those Who Love Boats

Forty years ago I stupidly sold my last boat. I have missed it every day since. It was my sixth and best boat, a Chrysler Lonestar. Three of these six boats I built myself, one I shared the work with my father. Building a plywood boat is a bagatelle particularly using the stitch and glue method. The seventh boat is built by this method. In the process I have bought six books from Amazon though all of the information that I needed was free on the internet. The books are “Go Build Your Own Boat” and Build The New Instant Boat by Harold Payson, “Boats with an open Mind” by Philip Bolger, “Boat Building For Beginners” by Jim Michalak, “Ultra Simple Boat Building” by Gavin Atkin and “Understanding Boat Design” by Ted Brewer. There are separate reviews for each of these books.
“Boats With An Open Mind” by Philip Bolger is not a “how to” book. It is rather an exposition of what is possible in the design of small and not so small boats. The book is large. It is a description of one boat after another. To read it end to end is impossible but reading it in parts and even jumping around in it is very rewarding. I assume that a builder could purchase plans for many of these boats if one tickled your fancy. If you have a penchant for independent design this book is a source of many ideas. Bolger apparently did his thinking with drafting instruments in hand. Personally I loved following the twists of mind revealed by these designs. For this reason I gave the book 5 stars. You might be tempted to give it none. My favorite boats in this book were “Brick” and “Super Brick.” I would like one of each somewhere where boats are seen as necessities, like the Chesapeake Bay, and in a time long passed. Perhaps it is not too late.

Clever but Homely

I have to agree with the reviewers that find Bolger refreshing and candid as well as knowledgeable to a fault. This book is eminently readable and rereadable. There is no doubt that there are many thought provoking ideas here. There are some handsome boats here as well but frankly many are aesthetic eyesores. I have an interest in a build-it-yourself cruising sailboat in the 25-35' range and the most attractive boats here from a practical usable/buildable sense are really pretty hard to look at. On one hand Bolger complains about concessions to style suggesting that to make them you admit that you are ashamed of the boat - on another page he suggests painting a mural on the slab side of one of the larger sharpies - a concession to their huge billboard bland shape. This book is practically an icon of good sense/ideas but as a guide to a boat building/aquisition it leaves one a bit frustrated. As for the plans they are of course hard to read - like every designer the author is entitled to sell his designs (not that that is the point of the book). A failing is that the book does not give any guidance to where plans could be purchased. Even it they don't please this readers eye the bigger sharpies have to be considered!
