About the Author
Gary C. Jacobson is Distinguished Professor of Political Science at the University of California, San Diego. He received his PhD from Yale University and has served on the Council of the American Political Science Association and on the Board of Overseers of National Election Studies. Jacobson’s field of interest is American national politics, with a subfield focus on Congress and congressional elections, and his current research is on the electoral basis of partisan polarization in Congress. Among books he has authored or coauthored are Money in Congressional Elections, The Electoral Origins of Divided Government, and The Logic of American Politics.

Jamie L. Carson is Professor of Political Science at the University of Georgia. He received his PhD from Michigan State University, where he was a fellow in the Political Institutions and Public Choice Program, now located at Duke University. Carson’s research interests include American politics with a specific emphasis on the U.S. Congress, congressional elections, separation of powers, and American political development. His most recent book (coauthored with Jason Roberts) is Ambition, Competition, and Electoral Reform: The Politics of Congressional Elections Across Time.

One of a kind source

This is a textbook with an enormous amount of information and analysis. There is useful information on redistricting, incumbents, voting percentages, campaign spending, PACS, contributions, party line voting, voters ratings, party unity, polarization, voter knowledge, opinions, at-risk and safe seats and many other political issues. Gary Jacobson has created a one of a kind source for looking at Congressional Elections and related subjects. Every student of US politics should study this book. About the Author

Douglas T. Kenrick is a professor at Arizona State University. He received his B.A. from Dowling College and his Ph.D. from Arizona State University. He taught at Montana State University for four years before returning to ASU. His research has been published in a number of places, including Psychological Review, Behavioral and Brain Sciences, American Psychologist, Handbook of Social Psychology, Advances in Experimental Social Psychology, Psychological Science, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Current Directions in Psychological Science, and Personality and Social Psychology Review. With John Seamon, he coauthored Psychology (1994). He has taught a graduate course on teaching psychology, and he thoroughly enjoys teaching undergraduate sections of social psychology.

Steven L. Neuberg received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University and his graduate degrees from Carnegie-Mellon University. He spent a postdoctoral year at the University of Waterloo in Canada and has since taught at Arizona State University. Neuberg’s research has been published in journals such as Advances in Experimental Social Psychology, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and Psychological Science, and has long been supported by the National Institute of Mental Health. He has received a half dozen teaching honors, including his college’s Outstanding Teaching Award and the ASU Honors College Outstanding Honors Disciplinary Faculty Award. He has served on federal grant review panels and as associate editor of the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology and teaches a graduate course on teaching social psychology.

Robert B. Cialdini is a Regents Professor at Arizona State University, where he has also been named Graduate Distinguished Professor. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin and his graduate degrees from the University of North Carolina. He is a past president of the Society of Personality and Social Psychology and has received the Society’s award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions. His research has appeared in numerous publications, including Handbook of Social Psychology, Advances in Experimental Social Psychology, and Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. His book, Influence: Science and Practice, has sold over a million copies and has appeared in 20 languages.

The best in influence

I have all of Cialdini's books, and if you can afford it, you will love this one! Dr. Cialdini continues to do a wonderful job of teaching in the area of social psychology, but the benefit of this book is that it is much more complete than his other shorter works, such as, "Influence."
The clarity and interesting examples will keep you reading and reading. Normally one would not find a social psychology text book described as "hard to put down," but this one most assuredly is!
If you are looking for that one great social psychology book, be it for a class, to understand what social psychology is all about, or just to get more of Cialdini's works, then get this book. I would buy it for you if I could (but then you wouldn't appreciate it as much. (he, he, recall "commitment and consistency")

I have a huge problem with books that misrepresent things ...

I have a huge problem with books that misrepresent things and people. By page 3 of this book, I was questioning its credibility. When the author claims that Osceola McCarty gave away her life savings to people she never met, he is intentionally lying so he can create the social psychology he wants to sell you. She put $150,000 in a trust for the university but that was only 60% of her life savings. No mention of that though. Of the remaining 40%, she gave 10% to her church and 10% each to her 3 cousins, hardly strangers. Shame on the authors for this.

Exquiste Healing

This is, first of all, a very complete and comprehensive look at the signs, from up and down, east and west, far and wide. However, I think this is much more than a book about astrology. My experience of this book is that it contains spiritual "Easter eggs" -- hidden nuggets which speak directly to the reader's soul. Let me explain how I found this out: Rick had encouraged me to read every sign that's prominent in my own chart, and I did -- and it was truly enlightening. But while doing so, I found a few lines that seemed as if they were written especially for me; something so personally apt and helpful that it felt as if a hobbling hesitation locked down inside me was suddenly opened, and released. It was the passage where he described the dilemma of Capricorn's footsteps: each must be painstakingly careful, because Capricorn believes that if there were an error, it would take so, so long to go back and begin again -- but the exquisite point of learning here, as the authors point out, is that had Capricorn taken the opposite fork in the road in the beginning of this journey, the worries over missteps and "having to go back and start from scratch" would be just the same! OMG! I'm sighing in relief as I write this. This has been the fear running my choices and actions for some time. Reading Rick's insight on the thinking behind this worry let me see that in truth, no matter what happens, mistakes can be made, nothing is perfect, and we never can (or need to) go back to the very beginning and start all over again. Life is integrative! None of our actions are wasted -- every step is step towards where we need to be. There is no perfect path; there are no perfect steps; there is no perfect "us". The bumps and lumps that come now and then are not proof of our inadequacy to the task of life: it is proof that life and ourselves are totally "Wabi-Sabi"; perfectly imperfect -- as beautifully varied and unique as nature herself. This wisdom was written in a way that spoke to my secret heart, a way that I could truly see and understand. I was released. I think each reader will find that although the book is enjoyable and informative (and fun -- Rick's wit and humor come through at delightful moments) it is, at core, written from the perspective of spirit: the focus is definitely to aid and assist the reader's own evolution and growth, using the story of the evolutionary journey of the signs as the means towards that end. I think that once you find your "Easter Egg" here, you'll know exactly what has drawn you to this book -- the sense that something in it was written just for you!

As a student of astrology for over thirty years, I have read many astrology books, but this is hands down the one that I connect with the most. It's a fun read, but also very comprehensive and insightful without being overly technical. I know I'll be coming back to it again and again. It's a must for every astrology lover's book shelf. Rick DiClemente and Liza Jane Brown are phenomenal astrologers who blend the intuitive and scientific aspects (pardon the pun) of astrology in a graceful, accessible style. Through "The Exquisite Zodiac," they create a strong connection and sense of dialogue with each reader, regardless of the reader's level of astrological training. As any astrologer knows, the more you read a chart, the more you see and learn over time--and so, too, it is with "The Exquisite Zodiac." This book has too many layers of valuable insights to merely serve as a leisurely one-time read, although even casual readers have something to gain from it. I am actually really upset about this purchase. Nothing about the Author or the speech itself is the issue. The problem is that I CANNOT READ IT!!!

I have a Kindle Fire HD8 and for whatever reason the majority of the pages come up too small, or the font color just blends in too much.

I will admit that this could be an ID10T error, and if someone could show me the way I would be happy to follow, because I love this speech or at least the few small bits I have heard of it. It's what I recite to myself to myself when I am at those "What now?!?!" moments.

I need the whole speech please? Can this be fixed??

Great Message...Terrible Presentation

I purchased this book after reading an excerpt of Gaiman's speech. I was hoping that I'd like it enough to give to a new (high school) graduate as an inspirational message.

While I do love the speech, and think it has applicability beyond the arts, the presentation of the message is simply terrible. The colors and fonts used for the text are distracting at best and impossible to read at the worst. Major failures are white font on a light blue background, or layered red/aqua font which is like trying to read 3D without 3D glasses.

I definitely will not be purchasing a second as a gift, and I may actually return my current copy. I cannot at all recommend this book. It's a shame, as the message the speech conveys is an important one for anyone embarking on a new beginning (whether career, personal, or educational).

Buy the paperback the kindle is illegible

Buy the paperback, the content is brilliant, that's why I bought it. BUT why oh why have they brought it out as a kindle version? You cannot read it, the layout is terrible
